What is a day like in the life of a bioengineer? Please come and enjoy Scott’s light and humorous views on design, travel, innovation, surgeon’s and patients through a career of personal and professional interactions. Scott provides a glimpse into the challenges and excitement of a career as a bioengineer through stories of real life experiences. He has experience in arthroplasty, arthroscopy, spinal and maxiofacial devices and has worked for 4 of the top 6 orthopedic device manufacturers globally. Scott will share simple innovations that have improved the lives of millions of people through design, medical device technologies and hard work. Defining and studying innovation has been key to his career and he will share a few stories to highlight some of the high and low points of his 32 years in medical devices. From craniosynostosis surgeries to patient interactions to titanium foam, he will share his personal insights on technology, innovation and bioengineering.
Bio:
Scott Sherman is the Engineering Manager for the Knee and Hip Arthroplasty team at Arthrex Inc. He has been with Arthrex since 2007. Scott has been in medical device engineering for 32 years and has experience at 4 of the top 6 global orthopedic device manufacturers. He is a graduate of Leadership Collier’s Silver Anniversary class (2014). He served as vice chair for the class of 2017 and Chair of the class of 2018. He is also currently serving on the board of directors for the Leadership Collier Foundation. He is Board Chair of Valerie’s House which provides free grief services for children who have lost a parent or sibling. He was chosen as one of the Naples Daily News 25 over 50 class of 2016 and as one of Naples Illustrated “Supermen” in September 2016 for his contributions to our community.
Scott studies innovation and product development techniques. He often engages in public speaking opportunities presenting on innovation and engineering.
He received his BS from the University of Memphis graduating cum laude. Scott regularly presents as a guest lecturer to the freshman Bioengineering class at Florida Gulf Coast University. He also mentors an FGCU senior biomedical engineering team each year. He was invited to speak to Florida State Bioengineering Society in 2015 and 2016. He also runs the bioengineering shadow program at Arthrex, a community outreach program to help young people make informed decisions about a career in bioengineering.
Scott’s travels the globe as often as he can get away. He especially loves train travel and has ridden trains on 5 of the 7 continents. Scott traveled solo to Tanzania in July 2013 where he climbed to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest point in Africa. He is an avid hiker and nature lover. He enjoys boxing, kayaking, camping and most activities that get him into the great outdoors. He sculpts small items in polymer clay as a hobby.
