The Biomedical Engineering (BME) undergraduate major is a limited enrollment program. Students who enter the University of Florida as freshmen identify pre-BME as their major of choice and begin enrolling in the required critical-tracking courses to prepare for upper division. The UF Office of Admissions provides all freshmen admission decisions. (Individual departments have no involvement or influence over freshmen admission decisions). During the Fall semester of the sophomore year, pre-BME majors apply for admission to the upper division BME major, which begins in the Spring semester of the sophomore year. The department admits transfer students during the Fall, Summer, and Spring terms.

The rapid growth of the BME department in recent years has allowed an increase in the number of students accepted into the upper division BME major (up to 120 students per cohort).

Are you interested in planning a campus visit? We reserve three days during the spring semester (typically on Fridays in March) for prospective students and families to learn more about the BME major. The campus visits provide an opportunity to speak with the undergraduate coordinator, academic advisor and current BME students during a group presentation as well as a brief tour of our facilities. Campus visit dates will be announced below in January or February to coincide with the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering’s information sessions.

• The UF BME Information Session and Lab Tours that were originally scheduled for March 13th, 20th, and 27th have been canceled due to precautions surrounding COVID-19. We sincerely apologize for the last-minute notice.

Please note: We receive a large amount of requests from prospective students and families for building tours throughout the year. For several reasons, the department is not able to accommodate individual requests. However, we strategically offer our group campus visits after freshman admission decisions have been provided so that we can meet with as many families as possible. We encourage prospective students and families to attend one of these group campus visits in the spring. With advance notice (at least two weeks and outside of peak advising season), the Undergraduate Academic Advisor can meet with prospective students and/or families to provide general information about the BME major (please contact undergrad@bme.ufl.edu to arrange an appointment). We also recommend participating in a college information session and the 90-minute walking campus tour.

Current UF students must meet the following minimum requirements to be considered for admission to the upper division program.

• Minimum 2.8 GPA in critical tracking courses (best attempt)*
• No more than two attempts allowed for critical tracking courses (withdrawals included)
• Minimum grade of C in each critical tracking course
• Completion of the first two semesters and active enrollment of the third semester of the BME plan of study by Fall semester of application
• BME departmental online application

*Only the best attempt in each critical tracking course is considered for admission to the upper division program.

Qualified transfer applicants will have completed an Associate of Arts degree at a Florida public state or community college prior to arriving at the University of Florida.

Transfer students must meet the following minimum requirements to be considered for admission to the upper division program.

• Minimum 2.0 cumulative (overall) GPA
• Minimum 2.8 GPA in required pre-professional courses (labs are excluded from this calculation)*
• Completion of all pre-professional courses and labs in the table below prior to arrival at UF (no exceptions)
• No more than three of the pre-professional courses (not counting labs) in progress at the time of application
• No more than two attempts allowed for pre-professional courses (withdrawals count as an attempt)

*Although 2.8 is minimum GPA requirement for pre-professional courses, a 3.5 GPA or higher in the pre-professional courses is considered most competitive for admission to this limited access program.

Applicants who do not meet the minimum admission requirements as stated above will not be eligible for admission to the upper division program. Applicants may not complete any of the pre-professional courses or labs after admission to the university – all courses and labs listed below must be completed before arriving at UF as a transfer student. There are no exceptions to this policy. The GPA calculation of pre-professional courses is determined using the current UF grading scale.

Transfer students who wish to add BME as a secondary major should plan to meet with the BME academic advisor prior to applying to UF to determine eligibility and discuss the application process. The BME major is a limited access program. Students must plan ahead to complete the prerequisite courses required to add the BME major as a secondary major. Transfer students interested in seeking a double major (two majors within the same college) or a dual degree (two majors in two different colleges) at the University of Florida should review the restrictions and requirements within the respective applications, located online at https://registrar.ufl.edu/forms. Please schedule an appointment with the Undergraduate Academic Advisor to discuss your options.

Note: Effective January 2018, CHM2211 (Organic Chemistry II) is no longer required prior to the submission of transfer application to UF BME. Transfer students who do not complete CHM2211 (Organic Chemistry II) prior to arrival at UF are required to complete CHM2211 (Organic Chemistry II) with a C or higher within the first two semesters of enrolling at UF. Completion of Organic Chemistry I and Organic Chemistry II (or the equivalent as defined by the UF course catalog) is a mandatory prerequisite for BME courses and a degree program requirement.

Transfer students must complete the online transfer application through the UF Office of Admissions by the posted deadline:

• Spring: September 15
• Summer A/C: February 1
• Summer B: February 1
• Fall: May 15

Transfer applications are referred to the department only after the UF Office of Admissions (including official transcripts) considers them complete. Applicants may check the status of an application online at www.admissions.ufl.edu. Applications are reviewed at one time and not on a rolling basis. The date of review can vary depending on the number of applications received and the scheduled meetings for the admissions committee. The department aims to consider Summer and Fall applications in mid-March and Spring applications in mid-October.

In keeping with the State of Florida and UF policy, the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering does not allow transfer students to apply to UF as a different major with the goal of completing remaining pre-professional courses once at the university and later applying to the upper division BME major. Transfer applicants should identify only the major they plan to pursue on the application.

Students who plan to transfer should plan to be enrolled at UF for a total of three years. This is due to the course sequencing within the BME upper division program. Please refer to the recommended plan of study for specific course information.
