5th Annual Pruitt Research Day

On November 18, the department of Biomedical Engineering at UF hosted the 5th Annual Pruitt Research Day. This successful event included a full day of student talks, keynote speakers and poster presentations.

During the event, the department announced the awardees of the Pruitt Family Endowed Faculty Fellowships! Criteria for the selection was excellence in teaching and research, as evidenced by strong teaching evaluations in required as well as elective BME courses, research mentorship of BME PhD and BS students, prestigious external research recognitions including major publications, awards and/or grants. Appointment is for a one-time, three-year term.

Congratulations to Dr. Kyle D. Allen, Dr. Aysegul Gunduz and Dr. Gregory A. Hudalla!

The Keynote speaker was Gary J. Miller, Ph.D., executive vice president, research and development at Exactech, Inc., who spoke regarding improving patient outcomes by realizing a vision for delivering innovation and differentiation in the orthopaedic medical device world. Dr. Miller explained several examples of the successful realization of a cycle of discovery, design and manufacturing orthopaedic devices to illustrate this approach.

We invited the BME industry partners to participate in Pruitt Research Day. Representatives from AxoGen, BioD, Exactech and RTI Surgical participated in an interactive industry panel discussion with students and resume sessions. In addition to the panel, the industry representatives set up tables during the poster session to help students learn more about the companies, internship opportunities and general career paths.

We had 6 student talks and 44 poster presentations this year. Faculty members judged the posters and selected finalists. Thank you to all the students who worked hard preparing for your presentations.
