Program Objectives and Outcomes

BS BME Program

The University of Florida biomedical engineering program prepares its graduates to enter the practice of engineering or related activity, for graduate studies in engineering, and for productive, competent and responsible citizenship. Laboratory and design experience is integrated throughout the curriculum. Humanities and social science courses are included to improve communication skills and to prepare students for the socio-economic environment in which engineering is practiced. The program will be undergoing ABET accreditation review in 2018, that would accredit graduates from 2016-2022.

Educational Objectives

The program objectives of the BME program at the University of Florida are that graduates will:
•    attain successful careers in a multi-disciplinary, global industry and/or admission to, and excell in, top graduate programs or medical schools.
•    become active leaders in their profession, creating ethical and socially beneficial solutions to human health problems.

Student Outcomes

By the time biomedical engineering students graduate, they will attain:
•    An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering.
•    An ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data.
•    An ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability.
•    An ability to function on multi-disciplinary teams.
•    An ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems.
•    An understanding of professional and ethical responsibility.
•    An ability to communicate effectively.
•    The broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context.
•    A recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning.
•    A knowledge of contemporary issues.
•    An ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.
