Smart Dental Biomaterials: From Antibacterial Therapies to Tissue Regeneration

Abstract:

Multifunctional biomaterials play a crucial role in the next generation of biomedical devices. There are increasing demands for new classes of biomaterials that are responsive to local stimuli (e.g. change in pH, temperature) for the effective application of a therapy (e.g. anti-infection, drug delivery, regeneration). The successful development of these technologies could lead to the improvement of overall health and reduction of medical costs associated with diseases.

In this talk, I will present our recent advances on the development of different smart dental biomaterials with intriguing multi-functionalities. Specifically, I will describe our novel dental resin composite with dual functionalities including antibacterial and regeneration.  Furthermore, I will present our biomaterial that mimics bone in the ability to self-stiffen in response to external loading.
