Dr. Willem van Meurs

Dr. van Meurs is the author of the recently published textbook entitled  “Modeling and Simulation in Biomedical Engineering: Applications in Cardiorespiratory Physiology” and is a world expert in designing models of human physiology.  He will present model design techniques in an organized step-wise fashion while giving examples from real-world products.

Willem L. van Meurs was born in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, in 1962.  He obtained the MSc degree in electrical engineering at the Eindhoven University of Technology in 1987, and the Doctoral degree in control engineering from Paul Sabatier University, Toulouse, France, in 1991.  At the University of Florida, from 1992-1998, he was co-inventor of the Human Patient Simulator, commercialized by CAE Healthcare, Sarasota, Florida.  As a consultant to this company, from 1998 to present, he was co-developer of the simulators: PediaSIM(tm), BabySIM(tm), iStan(tm), and METIman(tm), as well as of the Muse(tm) software.  He was an invited associate professor of applied mathematics at the University of Porto from 1998-2001.  He presided the Society in Europe for Simulation Applied to Medicine (SESAM) from 2005-2007.  He is the author of “Modeling and simulation in biomedical engineering: Application to cardiorespiratory physiology”, New York, McGraw-Hill Professional, July 2011.  Since 1998 he is an investigator at the Instituto de Engenharia Biomédica (INEB) Porto, Portugal, with a program focusing on physiologic models for educational simulation and on a training simulator for obstetric emergencies.  He lives with his wife and two children in Lahitte-Toupière, France.
