Program Educational Objectives and Student Learning Outcomes

BS BME Program

The University of Florida biomedical engineering program prepares its graduates to enter the practice of engineering or related activity, for graduate studies in engineering, and for productive, competent and responsible citizenship. Laboratory and design experience is integrated throughout the curriculum. Humanities and social science courses are included to improve communication skills and to prepare students for the socio-economic environment in which engineering is practiced. The undergraduate program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET.

Program Educational Objectives

The program educational objectives of the J. Crayton Pruitt Family Department of Biomedical Engineering undergraduate program are that our graduates will, within a few years of graduation:
•    Pursue advanced graduate professional degrees in engineering, life sciences, medicine, law, or business.
•    Build careers addressing human health problems within a multi-disciplinary, global industry.

Student Learning Outcomes

By the time biomedical engineering students graduate, they will attain:
A.   An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.
B.   An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors.
C.   An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences.
D.   An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts.
E.   An ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives.
F.   An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions.
G. An ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.
