No. Because Biomedical Engineering is very multidisciplinary, there are many paths to a career in this field. Biomedical Engineering is the application of traditional engineering expertise to analyze and solve problems in biology and medicine. This means that you do not have to major in BME to be a Biomedical Engineer. There are a number of bio-related minors and tracks offered by traditional Engineering majors that can prepare students for a career or Graduate School in BME (e.g., Materials Science & Engineering has a Biomaterials track, Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering has a Biomechanics minor, Chemical Engineering has a Biomolecular Engineering Minor). Students who major in one of the more traditional engineering majors will not be at a disadvantage when applying to a Biomedical Engineering graduate program. Furthermore, a significant number of Affiliate Faculty who are primarily appointed in these traditional engineering departments are conducting Biomedical Engineering research. This provides students with the opportunity for undergraduate research in their area of interest even as a non-BME major.

Retaking a critical tracking course may place you slightly behind in your course sequence, but will not markedly affect your critical tracking GPA. We only consider the best of the two grades on a retake of a critical tracking cours

Current UF students who declare PRE-BME as their major will be advised by the BME department. BME advisors will work with these students to identify an alternate major of their interest. Students will be advised to track for their alternate major in addition to pre-BME. This does not add a significant burden to the student because the first two years of all Engineering majors are very similar as this is the time in which students are completing the foundation for upper division courses. If a student is not selected for admission to the BME major at the end of their second year, the student will change their major to their alternate and will be on track to complete the upper division courses in that major.

You are not at a disadvantage if you have AP credit, IB, Dual Enrollment, or transient credit that occurred prior to your enrollment at the University of Florida. We consider this a sign of your ability to excel in high school.

Current UF students will apply in the fall of their second year when they are completing their third term of the pre-BME semester plan. A.A. transfer students apply to the BME major after completing the Undergraduate Transfer Admission Application on the UF Office of Admissions website.
