We're an interdisciplinary and collaborative department based in the College of Engineering and closely tied to the College of Medicine and many other university organizations. Within the COE, we work with faculty from every other department to ensure our students build a well-balanced and solid engineering foundation. Within the COM, we work with the departments of Surgery, Anesthesiology, Radiology and Cardiology to ensure the same well-balanced and solid foundation in medicine.
Students are admitted to the University of Florida Graduate School through our department, and affiliate members of our faculty act as research advisors for our students. A five-member supervisory committee supervises doctoral students. Three of the members are part of the BME faculty and usually specialize in the area of research the student is studying, and at least one typically comes from the COM or another health-related profession outside of the COE.
Course work and research experiences are organized around one of our six research areas. The focus of the degree programs is to obtain a solid engineering background with an understanding of how engineering principles apply to a diverse selection of biomedical applications.
